CHAT Site Information Form International GPS Service for Geodynamics 0. Form Prepared by (full name) : John Beavan Date Prepared : 31-OCT-1997 Report Type : UPDATE Prepared Using : 1. Site Identification of the GPS Monument Site Name : Chatham Island Four Character ID : CHAT Monument Inscription : none IERS DOMES Number : 50207M001 CDP Number : not assigned Date Installed : 04-OCT-1995 hh:mm UT Geologic Characteristic : Early Eocene tuff Bedrock Type : Volcanic extrusives Bedrock Condition : not applicable Fracture Spacing : not applicable Notes : The site is located on early Eocene Red Bluff : tuff, which weathers to a sticky clay. A test : drill hole in 1973 revealed a 2.5' crust of : clayey soil with a very firm 1' layer beneath : it. Underlying this is about 100' of sometimes : firm and sometimes soft waterlogged soil, with : firm layers between 100'-110', and rock : encountered at 110'. The rock type at basement : is not indicated, but may be late Cretaceous : extrusive volcanics. Additional Information : The GPS station was installed at this site for : convenience of access to power and telephone. : It is intended to install a new seismic station : on a hard rock site on the Chatham Islands : within the next few years, and will investigate : the possibility of moving the GPS receiver to : collocate with the seismic station at that time. : : A preexisting 0.6 m x 0.8 m x 0.5 m deep : seismometer vault was utilised for the : monument. The vault has been in place for many : years and is presumably founded in the "very : firm" layer described above at about 1 m depth. : The vault was filled with reinforced concrete to : make a pad, and a 0.3 m x 0.3 m x 0.5 m high : reinforced concrete pillar was constructed on : top of the pad. A 15 cm diameter stainless : plate with protruding 5/8"-11 screw was set : exactly horizontal in the top of the concrete. : Height of pillar above pad is 0.5 m. Height of : pad above ground level is about 0.2 m. The top : concrete surface and the corners of the pillar : were deliberately made uneven to reduce : resonance effects between the top of the pillar : and the antenna. : The stainless plate serves as the height : reference point. 2. Site Location Information City or Town : Waitangi State or Province : Chatham Island Country : New Zealand Tectonic Plate : PAC Approximate Position X coordinate (m) : -4590670.9 Y coordinate (m) : -275483.0 Z coordinate (m) : -4404596.8 Latitude (deg) : 43.9558 S Longitude (deg) : 183.4342 E Elevation (m) : 58 Additional Information : The antenna is mounted on a 0.7 m high pillar : inside a low fence, located on the grounds of : the NZ MetService station. The receiver and : other equipment are inside a padlocked hut : about 25 m from the antenna. Communication is : by phone. 3.
