The objectives are the measurement of crustal deformation and its interpretation, and the real-time monitoring of surface motion in areas subject to significant seismic hazard. COMET is a NERC Centre of Excellence in Earth Observation (http://comet.nerc.ac.uk) and is a joint venture involving the Departments of Earth Sciences in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and the Department of Geomatic Engineering in University College, London (UCL). The centres aim is to bring the full suite of satellite observations, together with theoretical analysis, to bear on the problems of the earthquake cycle, the dynamics of continental deformation, and the surface response to faulting and uplift, and provide new constraints for seismic hazard assessment. The centre collaborates in its research with groups in many parts of the world, including Ethiopia, Greece, Iran, New Zealand, Turkey and the USA. The postholder will be responsible for developing long-range real-time kinematic GPS positioning using data from the CGPS network in Greece run jointly with the National Technical University of Athens. This work will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Marek Ziebart at University College London. The postholder will also be involved in the analysis of CGPS and GPS survey data from other projects in which COMET is involved, and will be encouraged to develop their own research. Candidates should have a good knowledge of GPS observation modelling and prior experience of the analysis of GPS data, either from repeated surveys or continuously recording networks. The centre currently uses both GAMIT and GIPSY GPS processing software. Contact Sue Ling, Department of Earth Sciences, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PR, sue.ling@earth.ox.ac.uk for further particulars, quoting DG/06/013. The appointment will start as soon as possible, and is for 2 years in the first instance. The salary is on the RS1A scale at #24,886 to #30,607 per annum. Three copies of a CV, together with a covering letter and the contact details of 3 referees, should be sent to Sue Ling by 31st August 2006. Informal enquiries about scientific aspects of the post may be addressed to Prof. Barry Parsons (barry.parsons@earth.ox.ac.uk ).
