The system will collect and analyze GPS and seismic data for the purpose of estimating and disseminating real-time positions and total displacements (dynamic, as well as static) during all phases of the seismic cycle, from fractions of seconds to years. Besides its intrinsic scientific use as an enhanced displacement meter (transducer), the GPS/Seismic System will be applicable to assessing seismic risk, disaster management, and structural monitoring. Furthermore, the GPS/Seismic System will become an integral part of California's spatial reference system, which is complicated by tectonic motion, seismic displacements, and land subsidence. This is a classic application project to parlay research and development in geodesy, seismology, and information sciences to the realization of economic and societal benefits, by providing tools for solving real-world problems. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in physics, filtering/estimation, seismology/geodesy and/or inertial navigation systems. Strong computer and programming skills are required, and experience in real-time systems is desirable. The candidate will work with two PI's, other scientists at IGPP, and a professional staff of engineers, programmers and information technologists. Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC salary scales. This is a permanent position at Scripps, contingent on the continued availability of funds. Applications from postdoctoral candidates will also be considered. Applications received by April 15, 2003 will receive full consideration.
