I guess there are really three questions then: 1. Can anyone accept .gz as input from a station/ODC? (looks like yes) 2. Should we consider switching to offering new data in .gz starting at some well-announced future point in time? 3. Should we consider changing all the historical archives to .gz? In my mind (2) does not necessarily imply (3) especially since there are tools that can uncompress both styles, which makes it not too difficult for a user to handle a set of old + new data which is part .Z and part .gz.
